| CTeamers Burst from the Gate to Win in January |
Malaysia: New Zealander Bryan Rhodes won Ironman Malaysia for the second year in a row in sweltering heat in the record time of 8:10:35, fifteen minutes ahead of Jason Shortis and Lothar Leder of Germany. Bryan exited the water first and added to his lead in the bike. Australia: American Barb Lindquist has established herself in the first three sprint triathlons of the Accenture Series as the world front runner at that distance by winning all three. This is the first time that an American triathlete has dominated a major Australian race series in competition with all the best of the previously unbeatable Australian women .... truly a remarkable achievement!

| Pucan Half-Ironman Won by Lisa Bentley |
| Chile: It has become a custom at the Pucon Half Ironman that North American athletes from the northern climes who have been trapped indoors on their CompuTrainers during the winter win the race ... against opponents from the sun countries. This year Canadian Lisa Bentley, who won handily, reported the following: "The CompuTrainer has been very good to me over the past few weeks. I was able to ride outside until mid-December, but now I'm full time on my CompuTrainer. Of course, I rode it a few times each week even when I did ride outside. As usual, the feedback is brilliant and I am happy to report that my spin scan is in the high 70's and sometimes even sneaks into the 80's. "Indominable veteran American pro Ken Glah finished second to the winner Australian Craig Walton by a margin of 1min3sec. Ken hibernates in West Chester, Pennsylvania, during the winter appearing in Pucon to do battle with the athletes from down under. Last year he won.

| Six more "Best of the Best" triathletes moving to CompuTrainer |
Ever since CompuTrainer was introduced in 1986, many of the world's top professional triathletes and duathletes have asked for product sponsorship because they know it boosts their performance. The number of active top professionals on the 'CTeam' now numbers more than 50. It's not unusual to receive a number of such requests each month, but December 2001/January 2002 was definitely the high water mark.

| CompuTrainer "6 Hour Club" Grows by Two. |
| When Tara-Lee Marshall, two time Ironman champion, reported she had ridden her CompuTrainer for 6 hrs non-stop, thereby becoming the first member of the "6 Hour Club", some wondered if there ever would be second. The suspense is over with the induction of two new members, Shelley and Dan Bramblett of Panama Beach, Florida. Shelly (Co-Race Director of Ironman Florida) and husband Dan trained together on their twin CompuTrainers in their garage for Ironman Canada 2001. On four occasions they rode the tough Richter Pass course outside Penticton (simulated in the CompuTrainer software) for from 4 to 6½ hours. It was Shelley's first IM race, but she said " we had so much fun on the bike course we stopped to take photos" and Dan said "it was a breeze". They used the same gearing and everything including food and drink with ann 'aid station' table between them. Dan said the course was not only in their 'muscle memories' but in their 'entire bodies'. Shelley finished her first IM bike split in 7hr 14 in. Who's next for the "6 Hour Club"?

| Canadian Road Pro Lyne Bessette wins VeloNews North American Cyclist of the Year honors. |
| Lyne Bessette of Quebec City, Quebec, was recently named 2001 North American Cyclist of the Year by VeloNews magazine. Her season got off to a rocky start when she crashed and broke her collarbone at California's Redlands Classic, but she came back to win May's prestigious Tour de L'Aude in France and then dominated June's Hewlett-Packard Women's Challenge in Idaho. Lyne, like all the Canadian National Team members, trains on CompuTrainer and says this about her experience:"This is my 5th year using the CompuTrainer. 2001 was my best season to date and my CompuTrainer followed me from January to May. It was very important in my preparation at the start of the season. I was able to work with my coach while we were separated and we were always on the same wave length. My training sessions were critical in my improved results and the CompuTrainer was a key part of that." (in original French)"Cela fait déjà 5 ans que j'utilise le computrainer. L'annee 2001 a été ma meilleure saison et mon computrar m'a suivi de Janvier a Mai. Il a été tres important dans ma preparation de debut de saison. | Long time CompuTrainer users Greg Watson and Lucy Smith won the Dannon Duathlon in Carlsbad, California, on July 15. Henrik Svarre from Denmark and Michael Tobin finished 3rd and 4th; Andrea Ratkovic took 3rd. In March Greg reported "Once again, the Computrainer got me through another Delaware winter! I just got back from my 1st place finish in the Dannon Duathlon in Florida. Despite the Delaware winter, my bike split was better than the next fastest guy by over a minute. Some of my closest competitors have been training in Arizona and Florida all winter. Not me. I've been on the Computrainer in my basement." It's been just a year since Lucy and husband/coach Lance Watson had their first daughter. Lucy has since spent countless hours on her CompuTrainer getting back into championship shape.

| CompuTrainer is New Partner in the Saturn CyberBike program |
RacerMate is proud to announce that the Saturn Corporation, sponsors of the top ranked Saturn-Timex cycling team, have chosen CompuTrainer for use in
their Saturn CyberBike indoor bike racing program. The CyberBike event was inaugurated last year and was taken to four of the major U.S. auto shows where it was well received. It provides show attendees with the free opportunity to participate in a short bike race in which four people compete against one another on Greg Lemond racing bikes mounted on CompuTrainers. Each person sees himself racing on a computer monitor which shows him and his opponent on the screen in splendid 3D. CompuTrainer provides an authentic racing experience which takes into account all the factors which in real life determine the outcome of a race including the effects of rider weight, speed, acceleration, wind load, and road grade. It is not uncommon for people who participate in CompuTrainer races of this kind to discover that they have a genuine talent for bike racing and togo on to join the sport. This year CyberBike will be available to the public at 12 auto shows beginning in October and November in Anaheim and San Francisco. Other venues are a possibility and will appear in the events calendar on the CompuTrainer home page.

| Dave Tierney of Cary, NC, Burns Up Bike Courses All Season Long. |
|
In a short note on his 2001 race results age grouper Dave Tierney reported the following: “I had the fastest bike split at Duathlon Worlds in Rimini, Italy last month for the 45-49 age group and finished 4th overall. I then went to Powerman Zofingen Switzerland and won my age group by 12 minutes after coming off the 150K bike leg with a 15 minute lead over the rest of the age group. In fact, since winning a CompuTrainer at Powerman Alabama in 98, my biking has improved greatly. I had the 3rd fastest bike split at Powerman Alabama this year and there were 500 + competitors and I’m 46 years old!!!!!!!!!!!!“

| Rick Simons of Oak Park, IL, Has “Mediocre” Showing at 2001 Masters World Track Bike Championships in Manchester, England. |
|
Rick Simons, 68 year old World Master’s record holder in the 500 meter time trial, had a “mediocre” performance, by his own reckoning, at the World Masters Championships in England from Oct. 8-13, taking “only” a bronze in that event (1/2 second behind the winner) and finishing 4th in the matched pursuit and 2000 meters. What he neglected to mention is that he is now competing with a heart pacemaker which has taken some getting accustomed to this year. Rick may well be the only person in bike racing who is competing at the world championship level. And he does 90% of his training on CompuTrainer.

|
Dave is a professional triathlete from Thunderbay, Ontario, Canada, where
he
must train indoors exclusively for seven months of the year. Dave got a
CompuTrainer in March, 2001. After training on it for the two months
leading up to Ironman California he found that his hill climbing ability had
improved dramatically. There's a local hill that he uses as a performance
measuring stick. Previous to this year he was out of the saddle at a
heartrate of 150 on this hill; now he can stay in the saddle at a heartrate
of 130 and leave his training partner in the dust.

Rukosuev & Hasenbauer Win at Gulf Coast Half-Ironman |
|
Alec Rukosuev won the race and Brian Hasenbauer
won the bike prime at the Gulf Coast Half-IronmanLike many professional triathletes veteran Alec Rukosuev
knew about CompuTrainer for a number of years before finally taking steps to
get one in 2000. Now, having a banner 2001 with top finishes at Santos, the
Pan American championships, and Ironman Brazil, as well as winning Gulf
Coast, he's "crazy about CompuTrainer and has no idea how it lived without
it for so long!" Immediately after his Gulf Coast victory Alec returned to
his hotel room and spent 1hr 45min on his CompuTrainer recovering.
Brian Hasenbauer, an aspiring young triathlon coach soon to turn pro, won
the bike prime at Gulf Coast, and wrote in about
his experiences with CompuTrainer. "As you know,
I am a Triathlon Coach in Dallas and recommend
Computrainers to my clients. I have also used
Computrainer for my training and testing for the
past 5 years. On May 12, 2001 I raced at the Gulf
Coast Half Ironman and all of those hours riding
the Computrainer paid off. I had the fastest bike
split of the day (2:11) and averaged 25.6 miles
per hour which earned me the $500 Computrainer
Bike Prime!! If it wasn't for the training that
I was able to do this winter on the Computrainer
to prepare for this race I don't think I could
have been ready this early in the season to bike
like that. So far this year I have had the fastest
bike split at all 4 of my races and have won 2
of the 4 that I have completed. I actually won
my first two races with margins of 5 and 7 minutes
which was entirely built on the bike. Thanks to
Computrainer for making a great product that can
take anyone to the next level. Oh yeah - I plan
to make my Pro debut at the Florida Challenge
on September 23, 2001." Brian Hasenbauer |
| Dave Harju Wins Ottawa Half Ironman Sept 8th. with Great Bike Split |
|
Hi Chuck,
I am pleased to inform you that I won the Ottawa Half IM last weekend by 16
minutes 4:04 to 4:20 in second. My bike split was 13 minutes faster than the
second fastest person, as I went 2:11 for the 90K. I love the CompuTrainer
and people are continually asking me how I bike so fast. The CompuTrainer is
definitely the answer to get and stay fast as it is an excellent way to do
controlled intervals and monitor a smooth efficient pedal stroke. Even in
the nice weather I try to get on the computrainer at least twice per week. I
really feel that I will be able to ride with the top athletes once I make up
the small deficit out of the water. Thanks again for everything, and let me
know if you need some help, I hope to see you there (in Hawaii).
Cheers, Dave

| Anton Stranc Wins Canadian Clydesdale
Championship |
Hi Chuck, here is a quick Bio.
Anton Stranc:
Age 38
Profession Project manager
Weight 205
I am a weekend warrior triathlete. I started training two years ago, and run
four to five races a year. I have successfully completed two Ironman
competitions at Lake Placid. This year has been a break out year for me, due
to my work with Peak Center and your Computrainers. They are simply the best
cycling training tool available. I ride four times a week and three or more
of those sessions are on the Computrainer. This year the bike leg has been
the key to my success. I compete as a Clydesdale and in my first year had
all sorts of problems keeping up with my training partners. This year after
nine months of training on the Computrainer I "Kick Ass" on the bike. My IM
bike split improved 30 minutes over last year. My time trial speed of
43kms/hr now regularly places me in the top 10 in our local time trial
series. I won the Canadian Olympic distance Championship for Team Clydesdale
this year. My Bike split at the North American Clydesdale Sprint
Championships was the fastest of the day (unfortunately I was enjoying the
bike so much I did an extra loop). Last but not least, this year I placed
18th overall at the Brick Duathlon (675 competitors), and came 2nd/89 in my
age category, the most competitive. The strong bike leg lets me as a
Clydesdale be competitive with others years younger and many pounds lighter.

| Dave Harju Wins Canadian Long Course Championship |
|
" I won the Canadian Long Course Championships (GWN Tri in Edmonton)
on the
weekend by over 3 minutes, that is after putting it into cruise control
as I
was up 5-6 min at the run turn around. Again I had the fastest bike
split
with a field of excellent cyclists." more--
the entire item on the "more" page includes remainder of his quote.
" My over time was 4:02 in really windy/tough conditions. Helping out
at the
booth at Lake Placid will not be a problem. I am really ready to have a
good
IM as CA was just getting the cob webs out and I have been flying ever
since. Especially on the bike, nobody can believe how well I am riding
and
how smooth I look/am. I may even try to do IM Canada as I feel with the
tough bike I will be a major player in the race. Then off to Kona to
duke it
out with the big boys.
Cheers, Dave "

| Chad Hawkins wins the Keahou-Kona Triathlon |
|
Chad Hawkins began using CompuTrainer in the spring of 2001. He made these
remarks in a message to RacerMate after winning the Keahou-Kona Triathlon.
"It was such a high to lead a race with such a commanding lead. I think it
was
quite obvious that my cycling was what made me stand out on race day. My
time
was over 12 minutes faster than the 2nd fastest bike split time. I also
broke
my old bike course record of 2:08:45 or 26.1 mph average. Go CompuTrainer.
It
was also a huge boost as I can see that I am doing so much stuff correct in
my
training."
In a letter to his sponsors and many supporters Chad gave a blow-by-blow
description
of the race in which he said this about the race:
"The Bike - 56 miles
After a fairly smooth 1.5-minute transition I was off and ready to
fly like the first part of my last name (Hawk). Right from the
"get-go" I felt incredible! I literally felt unstoppable and
unbeatable. Without sounding arrogant, I passed people so fast I
felt a bit guilty I was crushing their moral. I was on a mission!
Moving into 1st placeS
The last 2 times I have done this race it wasn't until mile 50 that I
finally caught 1st place. By mile 10 I could see the leader along
with the lead motorbikes guiding the way. "Oh yesSthis was good!" A
few minutes later I would be the one with the motorbikes as I moved
into 1st. I smiled at Brent Imonen, a 4 time winner of this race, as
I past by. Yes, it was a genuine smile, but I will admit there was a
little intimidation mixed in with the smile as well. I think God
will forgive me.
As the bike continued, I felt stronger and stronger! Like I said
earlier, God was indeed doing something very special on this day. By
the 26-mile turnaround I was averaging over 28 mph and knew that I
was well on my way to setting another bike course record.
I could see the 2nd, 3rd and 4th place riders a full 5 minutes behind
me. As I made my way back to town I stayed as relaxed and
aerodynamic as possible against the relentless Hawaii headwinds. As
I past the many spectators and volunteers they all applauded the huge
lead that I was building."

| Another Comment on SpinScan Results
|
|
Christopher Kautz, one of the two partners in PK Racing Technologies
(the aerodynamic bike fitting specialists written about in the current issue
of Triathlete Magazine) made this comment in a recent e-mail: " I did a
local 20k on Saturday, first race for me since April of last year. I've only
been training for a couple of weeks, and only casually.
Despite that, my pedal stroke was smoother than it has ever been. Using the
SpinScan has really improved my ability to get my power to the road,
allowing me to waste less energy. I should have known that this would
happen from my years of using Computrainer to set up my athlete's
bikes as efficiently as possible. Still, the result was more impressive
than even I had anticipated. You can, of course, quote me on that." You can

| Ken Glah Wins Pucon (Chile) Half-Ironman with 98% of his
Bike Training on CompuTrainer
|
No joke. Many triathletes use CompuTrainer for almost all their
bike training, rarely venturing onto the road. The reasons for
this
include better time efficiency, higher quality training, bad
weather, safety,
more reliable performance measurement, and improved technique.
Veteran 37 year old pro triathlete Ken Glah (this year will be
his 18th
consecutive Ironman World Championship race--finishing top 5 in
five of them,
top 10 in five more)is the perfect example. This year Ken did ALL
his winter
bike training on his CompuTrainer except for two rides on the
road. How
effective was it? In January at the Pucon Half Ironman in Chile
he beat
Australia's top ranked Chris Legh and top ranked American Tim
DeBoom by over 3
minutes while also giving up a big age advantage to both.
Ken's performance is further evidence that riding CompuTrainer
can be even more
effective than training on the road.

Crazy About SpinScan
|
|
"I've been using my CompuTrainer at home (Canada) over the winter,
and my
SpinScan
has really, really improved (my husband now calls me a SpinScan
superstar!). I've used it on all of my long base rides and it has
improved me tremendously. I can honestly say that the improvements I
have
made
on the bike are because of my work on the CompuTrainer and the help
of the
SpinScan There is no doubt about it. I've done some
long
rides, but only as long as 4.5 hrs---that is a lot of
spinscanning!!!"

| Dear Computrainer: I don't normally write after purchasing a product but in your case I have to say how pleased I am with my Computrainer |
I've been using it for just
a
week, but it has made me look forward to riding indoors like I didn't
believe was possible. I'm not a racer, but I have to admit that
trying to
improve my own time each day is fun and it really provides a workout
that
simply is not possible on a regular trainer. The Computrainer is
money very
well spent.

"Thanks Chuck! The CompuTrainer is still our number one training tool. We couldn't do it without our CompuTrainers. You can quote me on that one!" Pete
|
(Above is from an email sent to RacerMate the day after Ironman Hawaii) Canadian Peter Reid won the World Championship Ironman in Kona Hawaii for the second time since he and wife Lori Bowden started training on their CompuTrainers in 1996. In grueling race conditions with a four hour bike ride into 50-kilometre-per-hour (31 MPH) headwinds, Reid won by more than two minutes over runner-up Timothy Deboom of the United States. Lori Bowden, the defending 1999 Ironman Champion was just under three minutes behind women's winner Natascha Badmann of Switzerland. This was the third time the pair, called by many as the world's fittest couple, came amazingly close to a sweep at the Ironman World Championships.

Joe Foster, 40-45 age grouper, flew through the bike course at IM Cal so fast he slowed down to save
his legs for the run---finishing 27th off the bike, 55th overall in 9:46:52, cutting 20 minutes off his PR
|
Joe Foster started triathlon in 1996 at the age of 35. At the time he was 70 lbs. overweight and a heavy smoker who decided he'd better change his habits. Now he's lost the weight, stopped smoking, gotten a CompuTrainer and finishes top 5 in his 40-45 age group. Joe uses his CompuTrainer to the utmost. Although he lives in Alamo, California, he does all his hard intervals indoors on CT (CompuTrainer)using 3 minute progressions from 160 Watts to 320Watts--just like the pros. This year he noticed his feet wobbling a bit in the pedals, and switched to a different design after measuring a 5 to 10Watt increase in his power on the CT.
Joe gave us this background information when he visited our booth at the Ironman California Expo before the race. He sent this e-mail message after the race:
Hi Chuck,
Thought I'd drop you a quick note to thank you for your time and enthusiasm for my finish last week. I can not tell you how much fun I had on the bike course - I was absolutely flying ( . . .and frankly, giggling like a 10 year-old the whole way :). My first lap was *so* fast that I was able to make the decision at mile 70 to ratchet down my pace, by 10 beats per minute and ride the climbs lightly, so as to have fresh legs for the run - I have never been in that position before. Net-net, the intensive CT training worked - the changes in torso position, biomechanics, and even pedals (obtained from analyzing the CT's feedback) worked. What a scream!
Thanks again for your support and interest in my story. Your product was instrumental to my achieving a 20 minute PR for the Ironman!
TWENTY MINUTES!

New Zealander Tara-Lee Marshall proved her mettle convincingly
for
the second time in 2000 by winning Ironman Florida in October in Panama
City, Florida. Earlier in the year she won Ironman Switzerland (her
first

latest
Florida win comes less than two years after she began training on
CompuTrainer. Despite a string of mishaps during the past two years
that
could easily have discouraged a less determined person she has reached
the
top. Couldn't happen to a nicer person--congratulations Tara-Lee!
Joining her on the podium was longtime CompuTrainer user Jan
