About Bill Edwards...

During his short 77 years Bill Edwards achieved high levels of success in three lifetime career endeavors.  Professionally, as a PhD Chemical Engineer schooled at UCLA and the University of Houston and working for Shell Oil Company, he led the development of a state-of-the-art computer simulation program which controls the complex catalytic cracking process in real time at oil refineries around the world---a world- class engineering achievement.

As a competitive cyclist, Bill became a Cat 1 bike racer in San Diego at the age of 18 and has been actively racing ever since.  During the 1980's he won Texas Masters State Championship Road Race and Time Trial events.   At the 1998 U.S. Masters National Championships he won four gold medals in the 500 meter Time Trial, 2 km Time Trial, Match Sprint, and Points Race.  During the last 15 years he has won numerous events in the Texas State Senior Olympics Championships.

Bill had been actively coaching cyclists, as well, since 1980.  His principal coaching mentors were United States Cycling Hall of Fame coaches Mike Walden and Chris Carmichael.  Bill coached eleven U.S. National Champions, two Masters World Champions, two 2000 Para-Olympic Games champions, and one professional cyclist.  He was the personal coach of 14-time Masters World Champion Match Sprinter Al Whaley over his entire racing career.

Since retiring from Shell Oil Bill turned to coaching full-time.  He was the USAC Regional Coach for the eleven state Southern Region from 1987 to 1992.   Bill also founded the Southern Elite Youth Cycling Race Team in Houston and was its Team Director and Coach; the team is dedicated to identifying and developing talented young athletes.

As both a coach and bike racer Bill used CompuTrainer in both areas for 17 years.  In line with his scientific and analytical orientation he developed innovative training methods which take full advantage of CompuTrainer's unique, cycling specific performance capabilities.  These training methods are described in his book "Progressive Power Training" published in August, 2009, and available above as a PDF e-book.   He used these training methods with impressive success in coaching/training Al Whaley to his multiple world championships.   The book now introduces his training methods to the worldwide cycling community.
